And they care about where their puppies come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BBC Radio 4 appearance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation also reached national radio last night when the Union\u2019s founder,&nbsp;<strong>Beverley Cuddy<\/strong>, appeared on&nbsp;<strong>BBC Radio 4<\/strong>&nbsp;to discuss the issue of ethical breeding and the potential impact of new welfare measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beverley has spent more than four decades campaigning for dog welfare as Editor of&nbsp;<em>Dogs Today<\/em>. She has long argued that the best protection for puppies is not the disappearance of breeders, but the&nbsp;<strong>support and strengthening of the good ones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small, home-based breeders are often the very people who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>health test their dogs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carefully research pedigrees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>raise puppies inside their homes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide lifelong support to the families who take them on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If these breeders disappear, the gap is rarely filled by something better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain has&nbsp;<strong>around 60 native dog breeds<\/strong>, from the Corgi and Bearded Collie to the Skye Terrier and Otterhound. Around&nbsp;<strong>two thirds of these breeds are now considered vulnerable or at risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These dogs are part of our cultural history. They worked alongside shepherds, farmers, gamekeepers and families for centuries. They are woven into our landscape, our literature and our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In every sense,&nbsp;<strong>Britain\u2019s dogs are a national treasure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protecting them means supporting the people who have dedicated their lives to caring for them responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A growing movement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Union of Good Dog People is still very young, yet the response has been extraordinary.
