A single wagging tail can make people smile, soften their scepticism and instantly make a brand feel warmer and more trustworthy.

There is a simple reason for this.

People trust dogs.

Dogs symbolise loyalty, honesty, companionship and family life. When a dog appears in an advert, those qualities often transfer to the brand itself. A dog doesn’t feel like marketing — it feels like reassurance.

That’s why some of the most memorable campaigns in British advertising history feature dogs. The Dulux Dog has been associated with the paint brand for more than six decades. The Andrex Puppy is instantly recognisable across generations. Even brands like Churchill Insurance have leaned on the comforting presence of a dog to create familiarity and trust.

But dogs can sometimes sell more than the product.

When a breed becomes associated with a popular advert, demand can rise very quickly. History shows that when demand suddenly spikes, irresponsible breeding can follow. Puppy farmers move in, and rescue centres can end up dealing with the consequences.

This is something Dogs Today magazine has been highlighting for decades.

From the very beginning, the magazine has celebrated dogs in media and advertising while also raising concerns when popularity risks harming the dogs themselves. Over the years, Dogs Today has worked to highlight rescue issues, encourage responsible ownership and support campaigns that protect dogs from becoming victims of fashion.

Many of the magazine’s readers are deeply involved in the professional side of the industry, too. Trainers, handlers and welfare specialists who work with dogs in film, television and advertising often operate to exceptionally high standards. Behind the scenes there are people who care deeply about the welfare, training and wellbeing of the dogs audiences love to watch.

That commitment to responsible standards is exactly what the Union of Good Dog People wants to encourage and support.

The Union exists to celebrate the best of the dog world — ethical breeders, responsible trainers, knowledgeable owners and everyone working to give dogs the best possible lives. It also exists to speak up when dogs risk being exploited, whether through irresponsible breeding, fashion trends or commercial pressures.

Because the truth is simple.

Dogs sell.

Their honesty and warmth cut through the noise of modern marketing in a way almost nothing else can. But that extraordinary connection between humans and dogs is also something that deserves protection.

This evening Beverley Cuddy — founder of the Union of Good Dog People and editor of Dogs Today — will be discussing this topic on BBC Local Radio with host Jo Good, exploring why dogs are such powerful brand ambassadors and why people instinctively trust them. (10.30pm).

It’s a fascinating reminder of just how deeply dogs are woven into our culture.

But it is also a reminder that whenever dogs capture the public imagination, we all share a responsibility to make sure the dogs themselves are protected.

That is what Dogs Today has been doing for more than three decades.

And it is exactly what the Union of Good Dog People is here to continue. 🐾

Why Dogs Sell — And Why They Deserve Protection Dogs have been some of the most powerful ambassadors in advertising for decades.
